Depression is known to be genetic and often requires adjustment at the chemical level. You can no more paint and draw your way out of depression than you can other things given to you by genes. And referring to a person with depression as one with "self-pity" you reveal how little you understand the problem millions of people suffer with.

Why not tell a person with a migrane to just get over it?

no, for some it is a medical condition. those who are clinically depressed truly have no control over their depression no matter how much they excercise or how creative they are. there are different levels of depression, it depends on the individual. it isn't a condition that some can just 'snap out of'. some with depression aren't filled with self-pity. unless you've had depression it is hard to understand or even be sympathetic to.

Yes, those things do help. Though most honest doctors will say to try daily exercise along with this things. What I found rather shocking about depression is that, yes there is a chemical imbalance, but they can't tell without doing tests. So all these doctors who are prescribing anti-depressants... are guessing.

when we are depressed .. most times due to the chemical imbalance , our electrical impulses take a different path to that of a normal working brain ....
doing creative things and occupying your mind with conscious thoughts ... acts as a way to reconnect these impulses along the right path again
so as much as i advocate the need for doctors in extreme cases ...
i feel we can help our self most times to lift that depression xx

Isn't it better to find something that works then to sit and wonder about things that could harm your mind. It is healthy to move about and do things. That is the first signs of healing.
