How about from the deli such as fried chicken, mac n cheese, etc? I receive food stamps in Florida, was grocery shopping one day and decided to get a sub for lunch from the deli. I expected to pay for it out of my pocket, however it was covered by the food stamps. I know that "prepared foods" aren't covered and thought that would be a "prepared food". It left me wondering about some other items. Any answers are greatly appreciated.

yes you can buy a birthday cake with foodstamps...just not HOT foods like mac n cheese or fried chicken. If its in a cold case then you can buy it. Or you can make your benefits last longer buy purchasing the items like: rolls, cheese and deli meats and make your own sandwiches OR perhaps buy the stuff to make your own mac n cheese and a chicken to fry up at home. Its more important to use them wisley and make them last through out the whole month so you and your children will have food to eat.

Generally hot and prepared foods from the deli aren't covered but baked goods like cakes and bread are OK - the sandwich may have been a fluke usually it shouldn't be approved for food stamps.

From USDA website:
Foods for the household to eat, such as:

breads and cereals;

fruits and vegetables;

meats, fish and poultry; and

dairy products.

Seeds and plants which produce food for the household to eat.

Households CANNOT use food stamp benefits to buy:

Beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes or tobacco

Any nonfood items, such as:

pet foods;

soaps, paper products; and

household supplies.

Vitamins and medicines.

Food that will be eaten in the store.

Hot foods

In some areas, restaurants can be authorized to accept food stamp benefits from qualified homeless, elderly, or disabled people in exchange for low-cost meals. Food stamp benefits cannot be exchanged for cash.

I think you can, but I would call the store and ask, just in case. I heard that Food Stamps will buy anything edible that's cold, dry or packaged, other then cough drops. I could be wrong though. Good luck

Didn't they give you a list of what food stamps will and will not pay for? That is Interesting, I would of think that food is food and that they should pay for all of it.

Maybe, ask them for a list to know for sure so that way you wouldn't have to guess each time. I know that is what I would do.

I don't know about today, but thirty years ago my mother paid for my wedding cake with food stamps! Uncooked prepared food (like cold sandwiches) are covered by food stamps but not deli foods like fried chicken, mac & cheese etc.
