you can take your theory test any time you like, you do not need to be taking driving lessons.

How ever, you will learn things when you are out and about driving that may stick in your mind better than just reading the highway code and other training books, also your theory test is only valid for 2 years unless you pass your main test

You can start lessons prior to taking the theory test - which in fact is helpful as a lot of the hazard and perception past of the theory test makes more sense when you've started to drive. You cannot take your practical test until you have passed the theory test though. Check out www.dvla.gov.uk as you can book your theory test online.

Yes you can take the theroy before you start lessons if you wish, but remember you have 2 years to pass the practical once you pass the theroy or a re-sit will be needed if after 2 years, you can book it here:

You don't HAVE to take any lessons to drive, but you'd be better of for it if you did. The two test can be applied for privately.

all you need to do is buy a highway code book at any bookshop, petrol station. read it and learn everything in it. actual driving is required for the theory test- its all in the book. they will ask questions with multiple choice ie. what does this symbol mean.
