Actually you have that completely backwards. An atheist is a person who knows there is no god. They might even have a religion, if it doesn't involve gods.

The word atheism means "no belief in god". It does not mean non-religious. Technically, an atheist could still be religious if that religion did not involve deities, like some Buddhists for example. But an atheist does not believe that there are such things as supernatural gods.
Keep in mind atheists are a very diverse group who do not all share the same beliefs. It's not like a religious sect with a specific doctrine. There are "hard" atheists (people who are sure there is no god) and "soft" atheists (people who don't believe god can be disproved, but just don't think there is one). Atheists can have very different beliefs (compare Karl Marx and Ayn Rand, for example; both atheists).
Also note that "there are no atheists in foxholes" is a myth. A prominent example would be someone like Lance Armstrong. He is an atheist, and nearly dying did not change his beliefs.
Note that there are also many people who do not believe in a personal god (a god that pays attention to you, reads your thoughts, creates morality, etc) yet consider esoteric things like "love" or "everything" or "nature" to be god.

If you were a deist then you could have no religion and believe in a deity, however Atheists are pretty much defined as people who either lack belief or actively disbelieve in the existence of deities.
On a side note, the revisionist claim that "Christianity isn't a religion" has no basis:
If Christianity was truly just a relationship with a deity:
*You would freely and honestly burn Bibles, as they are useless in developing relationships. It's all about spiritual outreach, not knowledge of scripture.
*Cast away Churches, as again they are meaningless rituals that have nothing to do with a connection.
*Cast away any spiritual leaders, which includes Pastors, Popes and even the human form of the Christian deity (Jesus) since the form of the deity are irrelevant, its all about the connection.
Etc...

Your premise is false. There are religions that don't have a God as the sole source of their teachings, and that atheists may thus believe in as they choose.
The statement that "it is not religion that saves you but your relationship with him" (i.e.; God), is a religious statement that you want us (as atheists) to believe while at the same time believing such statements are meaningless.
Arguments based on false premises are essentially worthless.
Your lead-in question is idiotic by definition, and your final query can't be answered in the context it springs from.

Man cannot have direct contact with God, the Inaccessible.
The Holy Spirit manifests Himself to teach man about God and his relation with the divine realm. That is why we have religions.
Some atheists did believe in God, others do, and more of them will do. Because no man can live without the highest and most perfect ideal.
The teachings of the Holy Spirit are immense, so the hearing only cannot satisfy man's mind. He must read the Holy Books, meditate on the sacred verses and practice them to realize the eternal truth.

Atheists don't believe in any god. It's not just religion we don't believe in, we don't believe that any god exists.
It is possible to not have a religion but still believe in a god. Such people are not called atheists though. They are theists.

Atheists deny the existence of God. Many atheists do, however, belong to a religion. That religion is called humanism.

No, and you have your definitions confused. Atheism has nothing to do with believing in religion. An atheist is one that disbelieves or denies the existence of god(s).

Atheist do not believe in god, but they often do have a complex belief system. I find that there is often more faith in believing in nothing than believing in God.
