beginning at impressioninsm and spanning thru fauvism. Please help! on a three hour timer!

The first artist that came to mind was the baroque painter Carravaggio. Delacroix tended to apply paint direct to canvas I believe. For example, instead of physically mixing yellow and blue paint, he placed unmixed yellow paint on the canvas next to unmixed blue paint, thus mixing the colors through our perception of them: creating the "impression" of green. Matisse also used pointilism as he progressed toward fauvism.

Probably the very first one on the ceiling of a cave somewhere...but then he could have sketched it out with charcoal first. I have no clue who it was within that historical time frame and how would you substantiate that fact? By x-raying paintings or something? Most of them painted without sketching...and many did both.
