It seems that once a young person starts getting situated into a good job, strong relationship or marriage, financial independence, owning property and having babies, their life changes. Their priorities change. Their values change. Many of them become slaves to their own economic burdens, like paying a mortgage, payments on a car, hospital debt from having a baby, vacations with the family, tuition payments for the kids, etc.

The idea of joining the military service goes on the back burner when all of this happens. These same guys will respond in a true national emergency, but right now they're content with letting the youngsters handle it.

Many combatants are between the ages of eighteen and twenty five. The military service tries real hard to get these people before they get involved as described above, because once they get involved with all the creature comforts of life, including a wife, they probably aren't as effective as a young, freshly trained youth with no outside responsibilities, but plenty of dedication!

Well those guys are wimps, but it doesn't mean they're unpatriotic....

Others reasons could be that they have a medical disability and want to join but can't, or most people are soo convinced by the media that joining the military will only help Emperor Bush.

Personally, I want to join but I'm not a citizen and not on a permanent status (green card), and even more unfortunetly I have to go back to my home country because of my parents when I really wanted a citizenship here and fight for this constitution...

Oh well, media says ****, bush does all the wrong things, kids are all acting and no walking, doesn't want to go through the hassel and would rather stick to video games... Or they have other dreams (excluding people who are interested in the militry)... Like a capable man might want to be a video game designer, or a teacher, or maybe a doctor... Going into the military might slow that progess so they dont join.

Maybe they did. There are millions of "capable" people that are ineligible for military service because the military has become fairly picky about who they enlist. For example, I have fairly high arches and asthma. For some reason the military doesn't want me even after I applied. Another government service DID inquire about me, but then I learned that I'd get to sit in this little hut somewhere with a cyanide capsule listening to boring radio chatter all year long. Even if I didn't take the capsule it sounds like suicide. Alternatively, if you get discovered, you're supposed to radio in for an airstrike against your own position. Joy. Just the sort of heroics I always wanted!

Maybe they just aren't feeling truely suicidal?

I play paintball from time to time and I have learned from that experience that I'm not too slick. My first time out I got shot in the back of the head by a team mate from less than 5 feet away. It hurt like hell. In the military, my parents would be getting a little flag and apology instead of me getting a lump on the back of my head. Then there are all the other times I was shot repeatedly... My nickname became "bullseye" because I made such a good practice target. So, anyhow, maybe we ought to reconsider the idea of "capable?"

A "passion for" things related to the military does not make a person a capable soldier. In fact, it might make them inappropriate for such a job. Who needs a person who likes the trappings and shuns the work, any work?

Capable men do in fact join the military, and many people who join up for their country are found not to be suitable material, in spite of their fine motives.

What is worse than what you mention is the fact that some of the strongest war supporters and the strongest "send the Marines" types in politics have been old men who have never been in the military. People who have been through a war think twice before they decide to go through hell another time...

Well I think it is a number of factors:
1. they know themselves enough to know they can't take orders from people and be treated like crap as an elisted soldier
2. The money is just awful
3. The Military training you get really doesn't do much for you once you get into the civilian area. Anyone who says otherwise is flat out wrong. Civilian companys do not accept military qualifications... here is an example: A mechanic in the military can be in the army working on Vehicles for 10 years but won't get a job at a Ford dealership. They are ASE certified, and the vehicles are completly different.
4. Parents just don't want them to do it
5. They don't wanna be stuck in some war or conflict that they don't believe in.
6. They want to go on to college and make some real money for themselves.

Being a military aficionado and being a military serviceman are two radically things. Not everyone has what it takes to make it in the military, and those who don't shouldn't be forced because they put the lives of the other troops in their unit at risk. As long as the gay ban is in effect, and willing capable volunteers are being turned away, no one has the right to complain about personnel shortages.

Because many examine the reason behind a war and whether the cause is one that that is in the interest of our Country, will protect our country.
There are many other options for those Americans that are a lot better than a desert climate and sectarian morons trying to wipe you out for Allah.

I think the average man would fight for his country. The problem is that the people that call the shots have no have not served and their tactics deter alot of men. The fact that many of our soldiers have been redeployed, some several times even scares me.

They probably just have lost their faith in our president and government. If an army was assaulting our coastlines im sure those same guys would sign up without question. Times have changed since the WW2 days when the US was actually facing a tough opponent with equal numbers and weapons.
