An American guy told me that I have a thin skin. I know he meant I easily upset by criticism or insults.

English isn't my native language, and I'd like to know if "having a thin skin" is considered bad or unfavorable in the U.S.

I also wonder how thick-skinned people always remain thick skinned, even in the midst of a tornado of criticism.

Having a "thin skin" isn't a bad thing at all. It's really an indication that you react to the world around you and that your feelings are in good working order. Many people have built up such strong psychological mechanisms against feeling hurt that they have become numb to their own emotional pain. The problem is that we can't choose which emotions we block out; eventually they all go numb - even happiness. So you are at an advantage if your emotional awareness tells you when something isn't right, or when you are with someone who doesn't have your best interests at heart. You'll know much sooner when it's time to get away from someone, with your capacity for happiness still intact. Lucky you.

No, there is nothing wrong with it Just means your a little more sensitive than some. And people who are thick-skinned about criticism are usually ones who have been criticised or bugged a lot and just learn not to care anymore.

It's not a very favorable complement. If he said "you have a thick skin", that would be better than a "thin skin." It just means you're sensative. It's not so bad for a girl. Sensativity isn't usually a very masculine characteristic, so it would be an insult to a guy

Not exactly, especially given that you're a girl. Girls in America aren't expected to be stoic, they're expected to be emotional--to a point. If you got upset over him telling you this, then you're too emotional.

It's not a huge insult, but probably worse than telling someone that they "wear their heart on a sleeve".
