In simple terms there are 3 competing blocks of economic powers.

The US, Canada and Latin America who are linked to the Dollar
The EU block (UK, France, Germany) who are linked to the Euro
The Tiger Economies (Japan, Asia, Australia) who are linked to the Yen.

Anything which weakens one block, such as a new poor member joining, strengthens the other blocks as the original block needs to spend money bringing their new member up to their standard of living.

When East Germany was re-united with the much richer West Germany, the tax-payers within West Germany and the EU had to fork out hefty tax rises to cover the cost. This resulted in a fall in the Euro v's the Dollar/Yen meaning people in those 2 blocks benefited.

If Turkey joins the EU it will require even more financing than East Germany to raise the standard of living.

If Mexico were to join the USA it would cause a financial hemorrhage within the US and benefit the EU nations.

The other advantage to the US of Turkey joining the EU is that it might make Turkey less "Islamic" and more Westernized, leading to other Islamic nations seeking membership too.

If Islamic countries become more Westernized it will make the Middle East more safer in terms of less Anti-Americanism from the Arab nations.

There are more complex factors involved, but the above is the basics.

We want Turkey in the EU so that Europe becomes Islamic faster than it's already happening. We can't wait to see Sharia Law in places like France. It will make the French Revolution look like a Sunday picnic.

It is not a military issue at all. It merely seems probable that it would be beneficial for both Turkey and the EU for that to happen, and I agree: it will foster trade, encourage democracy in a largely Islamic country (and where else has that happened recently?), and help bring people together. What's not to like?

Why would we want Turkey as part of the US???, it should be part of the EU because Turkey has always been a strong ally of the west, and is actually in Europe.

America has military bases in Turkey. This would make it easier for them to infiltrate other countries in south -east Europe

If Turkey joins it will become more westernised. America fears if it does not join it will become more islamisised. At the moment it has a high percentage of Muslims but remains secular.

I didn't know America cared. No, I would not want Turkey to be part of the U.S., and if I was European I wouldn't want Turkey to be part of the EU.

It would be favored by the radical fundamentalist protestants in the Busch Administration just because it would supremely piss off the Pope.
