Can I load a windows ME recovery CD, that will restore my Windows ME to factory install level, on top of Windows 98 and will it then become Windows ME? Or do I risk losing the 98 system entirely? (Two separate computers)

Windows 98 is far superior to Windows ME.

If it is a Recovery CD, it will Install Windows ME over 98, meaning EVERYTHING will be GONE, except the original Windows ME. It will be like you NEVER had 98 on it.

I would be very careful you could loss Window 98 and not be able to reinstall the Window Me. Therefore you would not even have a operating system without buying a new one. Yes you would Loss everything when using a recovery disc. I tried to install my recovery Disc on a friends computer one time and it did not even except it. It said "Recovery disc is not for this computer".

Yes you should be able to do that without loosing win 98 if you choose a new install instead of upgrade as an installation choice. It will be better if you could allocate different partition for win ME, which should create a dual boot installation.
