You can buy "shoe insoles" over the counter, which are kind of like a generic version of orthotics. But orthotics have to be specially designed for your foot, because that makes them MUCH more effective than a generic kind. The kind of health care professionals who are able to make orthotics are very busy, and so you need a referral to get to them, just like you need a referral for any other kind of health care thing.

they need to measure your foot so that it fits right. just the same way you need to be fitted for braces. each foot is different then the next
