I think it varies, largely depending on the individual cat's intelligence. My old cat is very afraid of rabbits, because when he was a kitten I had a very aggressive and mean spirited rabbit. For five years at least we did not have another rabbit.
However, I eventually got an extremely sweet and docile netherland dwarf rabbit, who never topped 2.5 pounds in his whole life. My cat, weighing in at a muscular 14 pounds and being the cat champion of the neighborhood- fearing neither cat nor possum, merciless destroyer of rats and mice... saw the bunny and immediately bolted up a tree then began to cry. He is *still* afraid of all rabbits, regardless of size and temperament.

The expert's say about 3 minutes, but, I have a cat that is still afraid of the sound of semi-trucks, someone threw him on a highway when he was a baby, and we rescued him over 6 years ago.

Cats have excellent memories, especially when it comes to things they DON'T like. If something bad happens, like a trip to the vet - they can remember it forever. They are also excellent at finding their way home
In my experience, cats can remember for a lifetime. I went two years without seeing my cat (he lives with my mom now) and he sill remembered who I was when I went back.
