I found a lot of materials on this . It might just been a simple case of allergic reaction to gluten, i.e., yeast and yeast products.; wheat and barley. It might be some sort of fungal infection and Viral systemic yeasts. Deficiency of the Vitamin B; such as in Addison's disease. It might be a case of herples simplex or candidas or thrush mercury amalgams, acidic foods. It might be a connection to a bigger problem.
It might be called geographic tonques. wherein there are red circles in the middle and white borders that start out like pinhead. It could be a deficiency of Vit B. Therefore take Vitamin B 100 mgm. Avoid acidic foods, fruits and vegetable such as oranges.

It might be a fungal infection...it took an old-school dentist to cure my problem, which started with a white patch or two on the inside of my gums; thought it was just plaque, then I got a HOLE in my tongue! Urk. My new dentist (after the old one said, I dunno, maybe rinse it with salt water) gave me a prescription mouthwash, which tasted awful, but worked within a week. It was antibiotics mixed with some other stuff I never understood. If the doctor can't get you a good diagnosis, have a dentist look at it.

When I read that it remindes me of my health class back in highschool. We saw a video on it and the person had a patch under their tongue b/c of dipping tobacco. I don't know if that relates to your situation in any way, but it did turn out to be cancerous. Hopefully her's is not that and it will go away....Good Luck..

Let the hospital sort it. They will probably do a scraping or small biopsy, but well done for spotting it and getting something done about it immediately.
Usually these are fungal rather than anything ominous, so don't worry.
All the best
