I googled RETAIL PRICE INDEX - that's what comparisons of shop prices year by year are called.

I live in the UK and chose a UK retail price index. As I needed historical figures I chose a page that mentioned 1915 (if it includes 1915, with luck it'll include 1981)

To the nearest whole number Jan 1986 index was 75.

To nearest whole number Jan 2006 was198, I think

The prices this year are nearly two and two thirds as much as they were in 1981

inflation has definetly risen in price since 1981 groceries are definetly dearer now than 1981. Other things, some are cheaper eg DVD players but there again I would think there is more choice around now. than 1981.
