I often see this and am just wondering why? Does it add flavor? Does it act as a counter agent? What is the point?

I've heard that the zest will reduce the bitterness of a bad straight shot of espresso. If the beans are over-roasted, or the shots over pulled, they will be bitter. In a good cup of espresso, no lemon should be necessary.

You'll find something called "Espresso Romano", but from everything I've read and heard, it's strictly an American invention.
