How can i train my siberian husky to play fetch and actually bring the ball back to me?

Don't give up, but remember that Huskies as a breed don't inherently "love" to fetch. Teaching a Husky to run, to pull, or to "sing" would be a more breed-specific idea of fun. That being said, there are some things you can do to improve your chances of a successful fetch. First, give lots of praise and make it fun or forget it. Then, tap into your dog's strong chase instinct by running FROM him when he has the ball or toy in his mouth. He won't be able to resist your game and will likely come right to you. Never chase him! Make sure you are always the one being chased or this game could backfire and he'll just play "keep away". This trick works well for getting dogs to come when called, too. Keep your play sessions short and ALWAYS be the one to end the game (keep him wanting more) and he will soon get the idea that you are a fun person to play fetch with. Of course, if he just isn't into it, strap on some skis, put him in a harness, and let him show you what he's really meant to do! Good luck!

A husky is not a retriever. Labs and Goldens will play fetch...huskies are sled dogs! Betcha can't get a lab to pull you on a sled! Instead of trying to teach your dog a trick that you like, why not teach him a trick you both will like. Get a wagon that you can hitch him up to and have him help you haul the groceries in from the car or give your kids a ride around the neighborhood! That's what they love. Even better, get a 2nd dog. Huskies love to be with other dogs. Go for a run with your dogs. Huskies love to run long distances. And when it snows...go outside and have a snowball fight with your dog. A siberian husky likes a challenge... remember when you throw the ball to use one word or phrase... start there... and make sure to praise do this for a day or two.. then move on to the second step bring back... now do the same thing pick one command word or phrase use it and only it do this for a couple of day use much praise... last step is to get the dog not only to bring it back to you but release it... use release as your command word.. and once again use much praise..

all dogs love to have a master, you could always treat train your dog that is more and more common when he fetches the ball then give him a treat when he brings it back. it takes time, but if you start getting upset and the dog is tired and bored end on a good note like sit and reward him

My sibe fetches and actually releases the toy on command. :) she also sits, lays down, shakes and high 5's. She is SUCH a good girl. My 14 year old son has been working with her for 2 years tho.

I dont think you can really train them to do this well as they are bred to run and run for miles. will he come back when you call him? Perhaps jogging or hiking are better sports for him.
