She's 7, about to turn 8 in Dec. I pick her up after school about 3 days/week, 'cause both her parents work. Everyday I ask her if she ate her lunch, & she says NO! Her parents make her eat it for supper, if she doesn't eat it at school. It's just a meat sandwich (she eats meat) & today I tried to get her to eat it b/fore her parents came to pick her up, but she started crying, & said she felt sick. I let her lie down for about 20min & when I went in to check on her she sat up, & said she felt better, but still refused any food or drink. Right now she's sitting in front of the TV watching Kids shows waiting for her parents. I wish she would start eating her lunch when she's supposed to. I've tried encouraging her myself, & talked to her parents. I think they are doing things right but she just won't eat lunch. What's that about?

I don't think it's a shame issue, our grade schools have no cafeterias. All kids who either go home for lunch. or brown bag it.
She just says she's not hungry when I ask her why she's not eating it. I found out that there's a snack programme at her school as well, & she eats the snack provided.
We tried getting her involved with choosing what she wants, but she still comes home with the lunch she brought.

Most children at that age dont have time for lunch, and if a grown up is not making her eat then she wont...I would not suggest making her eat it for dinner, that is just wrong...Maybe they should compromise with her and ask her what she wants for lunch...How would they like to eat their lunch for dinner...Eww....Come on, she is only a child...

Since the school doesnt have a cafeteria where do the kids eat lunch? You or her parents should talk to the teacher that supervizes them at lunch time. Since she isnt eating what is she doing? If it is a free time she may just rather play with her friends than eat. Also if she is eating the snack then at least you know that she does eat at school. Once you talk to her teacher and find out what she does at lunch time it will give you a better idea of why she doesnt eat her lunch. Maybe a friend brings a better lunch and they share that? Does she complain that she is hungry the minute you pick her up from school? How well does she eat at breakfast and dinner? If she takes the same type of meat sandwich everyday another child may have made a comment about it or compared it to something gross and now she just doesnt want to eat it. Maybe a peanut butter and jelly sandwich would work better? I completely disagree with making her eat her lunch for dinner. If she is taking the same thing every day to lunch then she is not getting the proper nutrition at dinner time, not to mention that punishment doesnt seem to be working. Maybe her parents should try not sending a lunch a few times. If she isnt eating why waste the food?

It would be nice if her parents remembered that THEY don't always feel hungry. Maybe (and someone else probably already said this) they need to try something different for lunch. Poor kid. A day old sandwich for dinner? Is discipline really worth her health? It sounds like a cry for attention from them even if it is not pleasant attention. A babysitter made me eat green beans for dinner once even though I told her I didn't like them and I threw up in her milk. I don't think you can force a kid to eat when they may not be hungry!

Sorry grandfather but what is the big problem????? Do her parents get mad at her for not eating before they get there to pick her up ? Maybe she is just not hungry. Is she way too thin? Is she overweight? You do know that at a lot ,if not all schools serve big meals at breakfast, or maybe she eats a big breakfast at home whatever it is it doesn't sound too serious. If mom and dad let her eat her lunch at supper time then they obviously aren't too worried. Relax and just try to enjoy your granddaughter.

She may be ashamed about taking her lunch. Especially if all the other kids are eating food from the cafeteria. So she in turn does not eat to avoid being picked on by her classmates. Then once your body learns to miss a meal for a while you become accustom to going without and it becomes habit.

Maybe she's just not hungry. Does she eat breakfast? I usually don't eat breakfast because when I do then later on I'm not hungry and usually skip lunch. Maybe that's what's going on with her too. As long as she's eating a good breakfast each morning and eating her dinner every night then I don't see a problem with her skipping lunch.

I would tell her parents to quit sending a lunch with her if she's not going to eat. It's just a waste if she's going to take it and not eat it. Send her to school with a small snack and maybe a drink just in case.

And, if you see that she's losing weight then make sure you talk to her doctor. If kids aren't eating a certain meal but maintain a healthy physique then that's fine but you should definitely worry if she seems to be losing weight.

Sounds to me like something might be going on at school that she doesn't want to eat the lunch there. And I don't think it is healthy for her to be eating a meat sandwich that has sat in a bag with no refrigeration all day. That could be why she is sick... keeping asking her what is wrong sooner or later she'll tell you, don't pressure her just keep asking.

Maybe she's not hungry. Maybe she doesn't want to eat. Maybe she has a disease where she can't eat. I don't know! I'm not a doctor!
