Why, why, why don't mothers (or fathers) who stay at home caring for their children and cleaning the house get paid for what they do? It is probably the most difficult job out there and they get nothing for it. They are raising the people who will eventually enter the work world and ultimately run the country. Can't something be done about this?

Wow, with the exception of a few people, you guys are apparently living in the stone age. I'm not a mom, by the way, I'm a daughter. Some of you answered very rudely and it alarms me to find out that so many people consider it a mom's DUTY.

i strongly agree w/ you. i believe stay at home parents should get paid b/c they do so much for the family (and i hate to say it but usually its the mother that stays home and the husband doesnt appreciate it) and what is ironic about the whole thing is that they call it women's WORK, yet some guys dont believe women should get paid.

guys go to WORK and get paid, and if they claim that staying at home is women's WORK, then why cant they get paid?

the govt should consider something like that...at least i think so b/c my mom has worked her a$$ off for 17 yrs raising me and i see her exhausted everyday, and for no pay, just out of love (of course i show my appreciation everyday)

While I agree with you that being a stay at home parent is one of the hardest jobs in the world, I am not sure who would be paying you? I would hope that you would have realized upfront that their are just some sacrifices worth making and that not having an out of home job while taking care of the children is just going to mean that you will need to live on one income. In the end I know it is the best thing that can ever happen to your children and you have made the right decision by staying home and caring for your kids. Good luck!!

No , we dont get paid to be " stay at home moms" . However there is programs put into place that allow the goverment to give familys without income money for housing , food etc. This is reffered to as " social services" . There is also a Canada Child Tax Benifit / Universal Child Benifit that allows mothers / caregivers to receive about $370 extra a month per child. And of course our heathcare is more or less free , however we have a high shortage of doctors. If you are considered a " low income" family in some cases the goverment will also help pay for childcare etc. In some cases mothers who were working before their pregnancy may have " Maternity Leave" which allows them so many weeks of paid leave after the baby is born.

up agree! i think that the most important jobs are the ones involving how our children are raised. and why can't stay at home moms be paid after all we are paying for illegal aliens every day to live and work here. i worked at a plant that hired a majority of illegals, and they work here till they are caught then go back to where they are from and come back with a different id and papers --now i have to pay more for the same ones, they get free medical and have babies here and food stamps or debit cards and yes i know because i have seen it myself! if we would stop paying for them to come here and work{ by the way they don't spend their money here it is sent back to the countries they come from, and yes i have seen that too!} we could have a mothers fund here in this country, it could be till the child is old enough to be able to go to school and then the moms could work !!! there would be less problems in families and better raised kids!!

In Canada, the birth rate is falling sharply, and our population needs to increase to support our social programs. It would make more sense to pay a parent to stay home and raise a child than it would to integrate a recent immigrant into society. Many families have one child, because that's all they can afford. Good childcare is ghastly expensive. Most people that have more than one child have either two better-than-average-incomes, or one good income so Mom can stay at home. It doesn't matter what citizens want or think, the Government will meet its population quota yearly, whether we do it with naturalization or immigration.

OK I am going to look at this like there are TWO parents in the home and children... one stays at home, (yes one of the toughest jobs in the world) and does it all...from early morning to way past way normal people consider normal working hours..late into the night sometimes...and you want to know if they can get paid? (I am talking about both parents, but mainly the one who stays at home) a parent looks at their child growing up and gets all warm inside, a parent gets to sit down and read adn play with the growing children, they get to go to the park and go to the store and go to the beach and make snow men/women and so forth and so on...the parent MAKES the meals...but also eats them too..does this parent have to PAY for the meals, the bedding, the car, and everything else that comes with it all..no it comes with it all..and the parent that is at work, DOES NOT see or go through all the fun with the child growing up, ( yes and pain too) so I am old fashioned in this one...both get what they need, male or female get what they need, because it is a give an take system...
if the parent at home wants to get paid, OK, but what does the parent at work get....they miss all the great things, the first smile, the first words, the child walking....and so forth, and who owns the house...the man, the female, the one at work, the one at home..everyone does....RIGHT?
so I do not see any reason to have a special pay check...
unless parents can start a new thing, and a contract that is not signed, but put in place legally, just by giving birth..that entitles the parents of said child to money back when the child grows up and goes to work, and this money continues until the parent leaves this earth...now your talking..
great idea...

good luck
smile

Yes we should get paid. And very well. Are jobs are the most important job you could have. And for those people who don't think that stay home moms earn their keep. Bare this in mind before all the moms decided they would rather make money then raise the children they created. We didn't have such a high drop out rate among our children. Their were fewer you kids getting into trouble with the law. And our children were just happier overall. And for the record us moms whom home-school our kids should get a teachers salary.

My husband is disabled and so I have to work to support the family plus do extra that my husband cant do. I would love to stay at home with my small children. If I could get by with just paying my bills, I couldn't imagine doing any thing greater.

Wouldn't it be awesome if mothers (or fathers) who stay at home with the children received a paycheck? I agree 100% that they are more than deserving and raising a well-rounded child is indeed one of the hardest jobs out there.
Unfortunatley, I'm sure that the government doesn't really care... You had them, you're responsibilty.
While we can't get paid for this, we might as well enjoy it because hey! They are our kids! They deserve a good up bringing regardless of us receiving a payment or not.

I agree, it is the hardest job anybody could ever do...but you asked for it, ya know? you knew there was no pay! and i dont ever think anybody would ever pay mothers for that (the government) because you know there's always some lazy a$$ people who would quit their job and sit at home in front of the TV collecting money....all i have to say is....God Bless you, i'm sure you're doing an amazing job...moms are the best!!
