does your son get an allowance? If so, buy the Dog food and take it out of his allowance. If he has a job, give him a bill and tell him he can't have food til the dog does.
If not, get the dog food and make your son do chores to earn the money to pay for the dog food.
I guess it also depends on the age of your son because I assume that if he is young, you are not making him pay for the food.

Protect the dog like you would a person. Feed him. If you can't take him in as your dog, discuss the possibility of finding the dog a better home. Consider a "no kill" shelter in the area if can't find him a home. Any shelter even if it leads to him being put to sleep is better than him starving. Definitely give him lots of water!

Buy the dog food. Why should it suffer because some human is irresponsible!? Then find a good home for it

tell him to be responsible and take care of the dog who is dependant on them and loves them unconditionally...so maybe your son should treat the dog the same and buy him some food. Or you do it...or give him to someone who can take care of him

Dog food can be purchased at any neighborhood grocery store and most gas stations. Then you can feed the dog.
