It's said in the bible ... "Don't use the lord's name in vain" ... (in a context ... other than relating directly to God himself).
IMO ... "God" refers to the lord, and "Gawd" is similar to saying "Oh, for pete's sake".

who is censoring the name God? its not a cuss word, its a name. like Zeus. i dont think anyone really believes in Zeus anymore, but you dont see us all censoring it now do you
