You say probably from a painting so I take the liberty to also include photos. This is a common print found at almost any antique store. I think you are describing the one with three horses, as you mentioned the nostrils flaring. You can see pronounced veins down the nose of the horses and it is done in black and white. It may have been a beer advertising promotion, reproductions can be found at flea markets or even on ebay.
