You say probably from a painting so I take the liberty to also include photos. You can try links such as http://www.horse101.com/topics/Art/ where you will find a wide array of both photos as well as various artists and samples of their work. The site is dedicated to bothe equine art and reality. You mentioned maybe something from the 18th and 19th centuries so I also thought http://www.artopp.net/horse.htm would be a good start as it features some of the most renowned paintings all different eras. This is a common print found at almost any antique store. I think you are describing the one with three horses, as you mentioned the nostrils flaring. You can see pronounced veins down the nose of the horses and it is done in black and white. It may have been a beer advertising promotion, reproductions can be found at flea markets or even on ebay.
