Top civil servants are very influential, governments often turn to them when they are in difficulty. Think back to the glory days of "Yes Minister" and "Yes Prime minister" and Sir Humphrey and you'll understand my meaning.

I think most people in the Business & Government who have been knighted, received their knighthood, because of their contributions. So they've achieved influential power already. The knighthood is just to acknowledge them & they get to use the title "Sir"..... whenever they use their name (letter head, introductions, events, etc.).
Anyone else who's been knighted such as Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Ben Kingsley, etc. are given this honour of knighthood for their contribution for representing England by the achievements they established in their perspective field of business &/or charities.
The only perks... is being called Sir.... & being invited to Royal Events. As far as I'm aware. But you must be a resident of England to recieve the knighthood honour... thou the Queen might, I said might give "honorary knighthoods" to leaders & such in other countries?

The government put these people up for knighthood...and if they have made large 'donations' to the labour party they coincidently get one. Why do you think Tony Blair is to be questioned? There are some very decent honourable people but they usually fall short of the knighthood...OBE..MBE...Pop stars get them for what I don't know....probably financial...public have paid millions in taxes on their records over the years...all back to money again. Sir Paul McCartney doesn't seem to have much clout with his at the moment....watch this space

I run my own business.

I give discounts on my services to the US Military and veterans.

I do not give discounts to people knighted by the Queen.

I hope that helps.
