Last night, one of your compratiots stated that the American farmers, herdsmen etc whooped the **** off the British in the So called War of Independance!
I say that you have never won a war on your own!
Declaration of independance: 1776.
1777 War becomes global.
French, Spanish, Netherlands, Canada enter war on your side.
French navy defeat British at Chesapeake Bay.
British Army trapped at Yorktown 1781
1783 Paris peace treaty signed.
As for "Farmers" etc.
Continental Army 17 regiments.
Militia, 14 Regiments.
French Division. French Dragoon Regiment
2 Canadian regiments!
Taking a guess, you guys are just born lucky!

Theresa F: Good debate. I based it upon many sources, not just one. The war became Global in 1777 and did not end until the fall of yorktown 1781. The entraptment of the British was by and large due to the defeat in chesapeake Bay by the French Navy!
I just wonder if the French had been defeated what the outcome may have actually been?

Well, America has been lucky. Hopefully, we will continue to have it. Heck.. We got the British soldiers fighting along side us now. Thanks
I think Teresa F from Northern England answered pretty good, so I won't go into battles etc. In fairness I will defend the British sense of humor.
I have worked with some British soldiers and find them friendly and funny. Yes, the soldiers would joke around about the US soldiers be chaps from the colony or something along those lines, but they would take the ribbing just as well and with a smile on their faces. Don’t take things so personal people, it’s like them saying hello and giving an open to their kind of banter. They also do it amongst themselves, but they are always willing to have an American join in on the fun.

This is the beauty of having allies. Of course the main reason the French were our allies is because they hated the British as much as we did. We didn't win that war on our own, and probably never have...But boy did we help out those of the European community in two wars in the early 20th century.
Now as far as being born lucky, you know what they say, "I'd rather be lucky than good."
It also might be about time to let this one go, I mean it did happen 230 years ago. And besides, ever since then, I believe the U.S. and the U.K. have been on pretty good terms. Now there is some animosity in this friendship as there are in all friendships, but it's no reason to get your panties in a bunch every time some American idiot states "that the American farmers, herdsmen etc whooped the **** off the British in the So called War of Independence." And by the way, there are many American idiots as I'm sure there are many English idiots. So my advice is to just let this one go, because no matter what, the outcome of that war will not change and England cannot have us back. Thanks and have a nice day.

listen mate, don't you worry about that, we won the war with the french and against the Americans.
after defeating Napoleon, we took a fleet to America, defeated the American navy even though they had larger and newer ships and invaded as far as Washington Dc and even burned the white house to the ground. all this was while we were at war with Spain, France, America etc... we were at war with four of the five of the worlds super power of that time and we came out undefeated in any of the wars. so they can kiss our white British a s s and cry out for never being able to beat us. that's why french, Germans and sometimes even the Americans hate us. because they can never achieve what we achieved. especially not USA because they are simply copy cats. they speak our language, stole our culture and call it their own. how sad is that. i think the fact they speak English means they have been beaten, what more could an invader do.
i think the problem with us British is that we have achieved so much that we fell we don't need to do any more or we get too arrogant, we just sit back and let USA run the ship for us, this is why lately we have fallen behind a little.

The American Army never stood a chance(of beating the British) in the war of Independence. However even without the foreign aid the war could never have been won by the British. In order for the American to "win" they simply needed to not loose to the British so long ans the continental army still existed Britain would be unable to leverage full control over the colony. The Americans simply had to outlast the British and on home soil that's just plain easy.
All the foreign aid did however result in the war ending terrifically sooner once the British realized that, they no longer had the resounding advantage at sea and that the land war was going to be long and expensive.
The British came over the sea expecting to find a bunch of farmers with pitchforks whom they could steam roll and go home. When they found out this was not the case their resolve failed them and they chose to pack up rather than fight a prolonged conflict.

Very true but don't listening to the Americans they don't know what they are talking about most of the time...at least we know what we are talking about. If it wasn't for the other countries and Britain being at war with them we would of won and that's a FACT.Americans didn't win the war with just pitchforks etc....they had guns.
The Americans also say they came into WW2 and saved our ***...well that's not true because we saved their *** loads of times and if you don't believe me.....LEARN SOME HISTORY.
You did supply us with equipment when we were in the thick of the war and we thank you for that.
We saved the world as well by stopping Hitler in his tracks in the Battle of Britain and even SOME Americans ADMIT that(ones who know the truth). The reason more Americans died in WW2 is because American troops are not switched on and that's a well known fact.Britain and her allies had the war won before you yanks entered. After WW2 a German officer said the British had the hearts of lions.
Even a Russian said during the Cold War the Russians were going nuke Britain but they were going fight you Americans face to face which just goes to show that you are no good at warfare.
clsga can't you fight on your own you Muppet....typical American.
Now can we all settle this because i can't remember how many times I've seen a question on the same topic on here, people arguing about who won well it's doesn't matter now because that was over 200 years ago.
I wasn't trying to be funny or anything but that's how i and the rest of the world see it
HAVE A NICE DAY

As a recomendation to all those interested in learning about the real history of America read "Don't tread on me." Yes we kicked Britain's butt but for several reasons. One, we had home field advantage. Two, Britain was at the tail end of a century of warfare. Three, Britain was broke because of the various wars. The people we had fighting for our future contry were also very highly motivated and sure we didn't have any "formal" military training but that doesn't mean that the people in colonies din't know how to use a gun, for god sakes they were fighting for their lives for 200yrs against the Native Americans, so don't pull the shovels and pitchforks story, its crap.

Are you british? I'm from Northern England so I learned the history from that end, but I was also able to learn America's history too.
At the time the war began in 1775, there was no army in what we know today as the United States. The United States was not even a country then. They were established British colonies (13 to be exact), with very limited population in relation to Britain. Most were families and single men who had come to the colonies to start business, gain land to farm, etc.
There was no military regime and so when the war began, most regimes consisted of militia men. These militia men were farmers, herdsmen, businessmen - they were not military career people. The Continental Army consisted of farmers, herdsmen, businessmen, but also consisted of Native Americans and African slaves, but they were only put together after the war was started, when rebels were able to convince men to fight against Britain. Remember, no one wanted to go up against us (Britain) then - they were the world's most powerful country (thanks to Queen Elizabeth of Tudor), and they had the world's best naval fleet, hence the reason France and other countries had a hard time in deciding to help the Americans.
The war began very brutally (as all wars are) in 1775. Britain had absolute advantage in size, skills, and support. At the time, colony diplomats (i.e., Thomas Jefferson) worked to convince France that helping the colonies win independence from Britain would prove profitable for them.
There was no way the colonies could defend themselves against Britain's naval fleet looming off their coast, which is why they needed France. But on land, despite the lack of supplies and condition of the supplies they did have, they proved to be quite effective, learning from the Natives of America, they used tactics never before used in war, and were quite successful in winning battles against Britain, more famously the Battle of Concord and the Battle of Lexington (all this on their own). The war raged on for 3 years before the Americans won a major battle (Battle of Saratoga). At that point, France felt that it could be possible for the colonies to win and with Spain & the Netherlands (all three countries with alot vested in the region of Canada), decided to help the Americans.
I have to ask you a question now. What do you base your statements on? Are you basing this on one source of information or did you actually take the time to research several resources before you came to your conclusion?
I think it's petty when people have to base their arguments on historical agendas, and indirectly placing the blame for those things on the current country. What the States are today is nothing like the way they were in the beginning. Same can go for every single country in this world. Wars were fought and all sides were nasty.

Wow..Can we get some links out here?
One; your either lieing or have seen false information. The French were there, yes. But the British had the Indians fighting on their side. As for Canada, seeing that Canada even its own country and was ruled by the Queen of England up until 1867; I find it hard to beleive that they helped America

Well as far as the farmers kicking your a**. That is very true.
The British army was taught to fight in a very strict and organized way (as you probably remember seeing in a movie: all lining up together).
The American farmers were given a gun and sent on their way. All they knew was to point the gun and shoot it.
So in battle, the British army was easily destroyed, even if they vastly outnumbered the farmers.
Back then guns were very inaccurate. They would shoot and hope the pellet hit the person. When the farmers scattered out, it was hard to hit them. But because the British army lined up side by side, as long as you got a shot in that general direction you would probably hit someone.

Not lucky, we have the men and women who will stand up and protect us against when the wolf comes growling at our back door. We know in our hearts that all men are created equal and should be free. That is why we won the war and that is why we continue to be free.
