The simplest definition of "female" versus "male" is this:

If it has a raised portion that can go inside, it's male. If it has a "hole" or recessed portion to go into, it's female.

A connector is defined as something that joins two pieces of (something) together.

Thus a female connector is a joiner with a recessed portion that something can be inserted into.

A female conector is the one that accepts the connector with the plug terminals. The outlets in your wall are female connectors; the ones on your table lamp are male.

A female connector is one that receives a component in making a connection When you screw one pipe into another, the one you screw in(the one with the threads on the outside) is the male connector, and the one you screw it into(the one with the threads on the inside) is the female connector.

Just think of a real male and female... Male has a penis (pins), and female accepts the penis (holes)... so any connectors that have holes accepting pins are female
