I would say something for the school would be good. Something decorative, like a small statue or a poster that would go with the school decorations. Either that, or if you know there's something he needs, that's okay. If you know something about his extra-martial arts life, you could get him something for that. But if you try to get him something Martial Arts related just for him, he's either already going to have it or he's not going to need it. All in all, I don't know that I like the idea though. As a Martial Arts teacher myself, I like to give out gift certificates to my students to give away as presents, but I don't expect presents from them, and I don't have a Christmas party for exactly that reason.

While martial art related gifts are ok he most likely has anything you are going to get him or doesn't have it for a reason.
try something from the heart, something expresses how you feel about him.

Last year I etched a dragon and framed it for my sensei, he collects dragon stuff. The rumor is he has it hanging in his bedroom.

You dont mention what martial art it is?

that fact could change the answers here quite dramatically.

You don't need to buy a gift because that can get expensive, but a card with a special personal thank you would be appropriate and I'm sure he would appreciate it.

Nothing. You don't owe him anything. His gift should be knowing that he teaches a art to you and you are gratuful for that
