I think that despite 9/11, etc., that Americans are more "cheerful" on vacation. I think that because Americans have so much less vacation time than practically everyone, we're just so happy to actually be on vacation, that we're overly cheery. Also, I think our relative geographic isolation insulates us from a lot of the problems out there. In my observation, Aussies are even more cheerful, and they're a lot more geographically isolated.
On the other hand, I think a lot of Europeans are too cynical and pessimistic!

As your Canadian neighbour I would say no. Infact since the 911 days it seems that you don't trust anyone and that is not cheery. Its not that you as individuals are not cheery at times. Its just hard for a nation to be happy while at war. Your country has had some hard years lately and worry over terrorism takes some of the joy out of life. I wish this were not the case. However, I would still want to live in North America than any other country.

A lot of people think Americans are rude, but I have come across many that are very friendly and cheerful. Just stay happy! Don't worry what people say about you being TOO cheery! =)

Cheery isn't how I'd describe it. Selfish and arrogant, maybe. If Americans were cheery, the rest of the world wouldn't hate them quite so much as they obviously do.

Everyone else is just jealous. I'd rather be cheery than a melancholy freak!
