I think church leaders get a little egotistical. Thinking that they are 'higher up' and therefore know exactly what God wants. But end up losing track, and veering others off track too. We are mindless sheep at times. With the a blind shepard, disaster strikes.

It's not the churches, it's the people in the churches.
People do what they want to do, and use religion to justify it. No one can really know the will of God, since that's taken on faith. He doesn't really make the ground open up and swallow people, or speak in a booming voice from the heavens, or otherwise make his wishes explicitly known.
The problem is that most people are alienated from each other. We think in terms of separation (which is sin), so it's easy to do bad things to other people.
