You should tell it like it is first and then soothe the burn with some soft, comforting feel good stuff. That way you get what needs to be said out of the way and they are left with a warm fuzzy comfused feeling after the whole thing is over.

Although I believe in tough love, there are times when people need the feel good stuff. Its just a matter of when to use it ( I think it's called tactfulness.)
*people, please correct me if I'm wrong, my vocabulary has gone downhill a bit over the years* :P

But some people get pissy no matter what, so it doesn't matter with them.
