Bank officials pointed out that the immigration benefits weren't a one-way street: About 90 percent, or about $460 billion, of the income generated by Latin American-born migrants stays in the United States. Bendixen warned that if the United States shut its door to Latino immigrants, as Congress is attempting to do, the U.S. economy would be "close to collapse."

The point isn't about legal immigrants, its about illegal aliens. There's a huge difference.Legal immigrants from all nations contribute to the US economy.Illegal aliens are a drain on services, schools, hospitals, prisons etc.
And your point is lost because you don't offer any facts and proof to back up your posts.
Latin American migrants tend to be poor by U.S. standards: Three out of five earn annual incomes of less than $30,000.
I think you have missed the point of the entire article. You should have read it twice You only saw what you wanted to see.

Hi, Has anyone stopped to think about the taxes that are withheld from the illegal immigrants paychecks? The illegals do not file income tax returns for fear that the IRS will report them to the INS and then they will be deported(untrue). The IRS does not report to the INS. If you are low income and file your taxes you get a return of all or most of the tax that has been withheld from your paycheck. So what happens to all that money that is withheld from the illegals paychecks if they don't file? The government gets to keep it, that's what. I know this to be factual, because I worked at a hospital where lots of illegals worked. None of them filed income tax returns, proof that illegals DO pay taxes. That has to have an effect on the U.S. economy.

Not clear thinking, especially if coming from a bank official. You said the US would collapse if the door was closed. Logically, then, we need to open-wide our borders and encourage even more immigrants in order to fire up our economy. Bilge!

I notice that this says Latin American and not illegal immigrant. There is a big difference. Legal immigrants contribute to tax dollars, education, science, medical fields and lots of other aspects of our culture. Illegals take from all of those.

They don't generate external "income". It is already dollars in the US Economy. We would be in better shape because of the cost of illegal immigrants to the economy.

Don't buy that for a second and I'm more than game to give it a shot. What we would get in return by deporting them is priceless. It's not all about the money.

That is BS. And what about the money we would save?
Additional details: The ContraCosta Times? That sounds a little biased.
