I want to get a cat but I only have a small patio (on the ground floor) and i can't get a cat flap, so the cat wouldn't be able to go outside that much- are there any breeds of cat which generally prefer to stay indoors? Persian??

Also, how do I stop my whole flat smelling like a litter tray?

I agree that most cats, if they've never gone outside are perfectly happy to live inside with you ... especially if you have toys, an activity centre & things to keep them amused - maybe even another cat to keep them company.

I'm sure that your local rescue centre will have a selection of cats, suitable for you, to choose from.

If you want a pedigree cat, then you might also like to consider some other things ... head shape - do you want a cat with a flatter face, an Oriental face or just something in between. Do you want a cat with long hair? Or do you prefer short or curl? Do you want a more active cat, a real companion very interested in everything you do or something a little more laid back? Obviously personality tends to vary with each individual kitten but normally breeds as a whole have tendencies towards certain types of behaviour.

Just as a quick guide:

LONGHAIR

Persians have cobby bodies, flattish faces & masses of silky long hair that will require daily brushing or it has a tendency to matt. They are considered to be affectionate, loving & reasonably quiet & placid. Kittens are generally readily available in a wide range of colours.

Ragdolls are large cats, generally considered to be one of the most gentle & easy going of breeds, ideally suitable as indoor cats. They fur is non-matting & doesn't require daily brushing. They come in pointed patterns (like a Siamese) - some with white mittens, some without & some bicolour with an inverted V shape of white over those noses.

SHORT HAIR

Exotic - if you like the cobby body & flattish face of the Persian then you may be interested in an Exotic - they have thick, plush double coats & are quiet peaceful cats, available in a range of colours.

Siamese - longer faces & long, lean, lithe bodies, with short hair. Intelligent, loving & very companiable - often with distinctive voices that they use to comment on you & what you are doing.

CURLY

Devon Rex - really distinctive pixie like little faces & great big ears. Active, inquisitive & generally love spending time with their people. Often quite talkative.

Selkirk Rex - larger boned & less extreme looking than the Devon Rex & can have either long or short curly hair (some even have straight hair). Said to be loveable clowns, affectionate & nosey & playful.

Hope this helps.

Persian might be good although I don't know much about them. If you are only going to have one, get one that tolerates being alone well. Some breeds really don't. As far as odor from a litter box is concerned, don't use generic litter. I recommend scoopable (clumping) clay litter, or crystal litter. Either way, the biggest factor will be how often you clean the box. I suggest daily, if not twice daily. The longer you let it go, the more it will smell.

I also go with adopting a homeless cat. Mine have always been indoors-only. However, you need to be reeeeeallly vigilant about changing the litter box. If you do this daily (using scoopable litter and sprinkling on some carpet freshener or baking soda), smell shouldn't be an issue. Also, consider adopting an adult cat that has been spayed or neutered, and females are less likely to smell bad than males!

Pure bread ONLY IF I adopted it. Not buying from a breeder. I want to save it from the shelter or something. I have 4 Mixed Breeds I Love them. Have a little of 2 cats in 1!

Devon Rex.. if shedding is a problem. They have hair like a poodle. They look like they walked out of a Star Wars movie. Rag Doll.. they are defenceless creatures. Whole body is double jointed so easily maimed. They prefer to stay inside. Both breeds are expensive. Or you can choose and adult cat from your local shelter that needs a home desperately. White cats with blue eyes are always good choices for they are deaf, and thats the last thing they want is out.

One that needs a good home. There are plenty of cats out there that live in garabage cans and need homes. When I was growing up, my mom worked for a vet and we would go get the cats off the streets and feed them. Sometimes they became ours and other times we would find them homes. In my experience, they are just as good as the store-bought cats.

Most cats prefer to stay indoors unless they were raised outdoors. Why does it need to be a particular breed?? There are tons and tons of homelss cats at shelters and on petfinder that are desperate for a loving furrever home. I recommend trying a local shelter, or petfinder. You can find the absolute best cats there!

As long as the cat has a box, I've never really seen a breed that couldn't be perfectly content inside. I've got 3 domestic shorthairs- all of them rescues with wild mothers- and they enjoy nice, soft, comfy things. And they know where to find the food.

any cat will be fine indoors only if you get one which hasn't ever been outside. Why not try the CPL as they often have adult cats which cannot go outside for a variety of reasons.

go to the shelter and get one that needs a home - if a cat has never gone out it won't ask to
