One who disbelieves or denies the existence of God or gods.

I don’t believe in communism so you wouldn’t find me hanging around there, so why do they feel the need or desire for that matter to hang out in the Religion and Spirituality section of Yahoo answers.

Why do so many theists think that they are the first person to think of this question?

1.) It's not just religion, it's "spirituality" also.
2.) I care about religion because the beliefs of other people have a direct bearing upon my own rights--especially in the U.S., where so many people seem to think that their religion needs to have a say in laws that restrict MY rights. I care about religion because I have to use money that proclaims a belief in a god I don't believe in. I care about religion because my family is religious. I care about religion because some people who are religious try to influence what can be taught in the schools that my sister and mother and brother-in-law teach in.

Beyond that, I've always had an interest in mythology, and a great deal of mythology is found exclusively on the "R&S" page.

They are not encumbered by the same rules Christians uphold. They can examine all aspects of belief,

Some are agnostic's they believe in something, just not what.

I am a Democrate, but I read Republican literature, because I want to know what is going through their heads.

It has been said one person who said that was Helen Nearing, that Christ was a communist-Because he believed in sharing.

That is a viewpoint you might not get from a frantic Christians, but from a free Thinker.

This question has been asked and answered a million times. Atheists have opinions about religion and spirituality, too. Some came from religious backgrounds and perhaps were even persons of faith once upon a time. Also, some consider themselves to be spiritual, though not all are fond of the term.

For me, I am here to learn. I think it's important to understand how my neighbors of faith think. Plus, religion has been intruding more and more on our lives, and I think many of us would like to know why some people think they have the right to impose their beliefs and prejudices on everyone.

Atheist should not push their views on other people. I see nothing wrong with the curious hanging around this section, maybe learning a thing or two or asking a question. The level of rude commentary from atheists is getting out of hand. I think they should ask for a section of their own. No, nobody should push religion on you, but who does it affect?

I would say the JW on the street bossing us around and shoving papers in our hands is going too far. I would say that a missionary going to India where most of the people follow Islam, Hinduism, Brahmanism, animism and a host of other religions such as Jainism, Zoroastrianism, etc. is inappropriate and rather colonialist. That said, get a life as an atheist and take your views elsewhere.

Everyone has an opinion about Religion, even those who don't believe in the things Religion stands for. One doesn't need to be a Politician in order to discuss Politics.

Oh, are there membership requirements? I don't remember a list of restrictions to any of the categories.

You didn't mention your religious or SPIRITUAL beliefs, so who are you to criticize anybody else? For all we know, you could be agnostic or atheist, or a member of any other religious or spiritual group (which may or may not meet the approval of others who frequent this category.)

I genuinely like to see what people believe and try and talk them down from the tall, tall cliff they seemed to have climbed up to.

If I can challenge a person to think for a few seconds, it's totally worth it.

... that and I find a lot of the questions here hilarious. ;)

why do so many believers hang around the other sections?
I have lost count of the amount of times I have seen answers in other sections that begin with
"According to Gods law....." or "Jesus said...."
When you learn to keep your religious beliefs to yourself, you will find that people leave you alone to practise them

For the reasons a lot of the others have given, and because I don't have a lot of other atheists to play with at home.
