Does it make a difference whether the recording you're listening to is stereo or not? Why do they designate certain sounds for certain ears?

Yeah, I agree with the first answerer. They are made to fit specifically in an ear to hear it, and some songs alternate the balance of sounds, a band called Greenday does that quite often in one of their C.D.s.

Not sure about sound, but ear buds are formed to fit left or right ear. If you have them switched, they will just feel funny and may fall out.

they're form fitted so if you put them in backwards you don't hear as well and they don't fit as well
