I don't have the discs to re-install Office or many of my other programs because I bought the computer used and it came with them. Is there any way that I can copy the programs onto disc from the computer if I am going to lose them? The computer has enough memory to be upgraded to XP.

Don't listen to any of them. You can perform a upgrade option when installing XP and keep the file as fat32. Then you can convert the entire file system to NTFS. Go to microsoft.com @ the site below and you can convert the entire hdd to NTFS after you install Windows XP in the Fat32 format...I have done these many times without any problems or hitches at all. Thanks

Boot your computer up to the desktop, insert the Windows XP disc into your CD ROM drive. When the installation screen appears be sure to select the upgrade option (it should be the default install option) This will preserve your installed programs and computer settings. It is a good idea to back-up your files and documents before upgrading as a safety precaution, especially anything in your My Documents folder. Refer to the source link below for more info. Hope this helps!

When you boot from a win xp installation cd, if you have win 98 installed on your computer then you should see two options on the screen, Upgrade and New Install. If you choose Upgrade then all programs and all data on your computer will remain as they are and only win98 will be updated to win xp.

If you "upgrade" (not a reliable way to go...), you won't loose your programs, but the stability of the system is one thing you'd have to be looking after by the minute..
The best way is to fresh-install XP and get a copy of Office XP (at least..), and fresh-install that too.
You know, your documents *are not* your programs... If you have ot reinstall MS Office, you still get to keep all the .docs and .xlss you have...

i don't think so, but it depends on what version of office you're using. if you are using the one for 98, the graphics might not work, so download the office 2007 beta from microsoft. it's free!!

These 2 OSs use different file systems, so yes, you will most likely lose EVERYTHING! Make sure you have a backup of all your stuff before you do the upgrade. :)

If you do an upgrade, you shouldn't lose it. It should stay on your computer.
