As a Nikon Retailer I can tell you there are only two flashes I would ever put on my D50. The SB-600, and the SB-800, though there is a new flash coming at the end of the month, the SB-400, but I haven't read about it yet, it will be really inexpensive though.

The Vivitar flashes are prone to Trigger voltage issues and could actualy harm your camera.

Besides even "dedicated" flashes, don't work in all modes. Only the manufacturers own recommended flashes will work in all modes.

Hope that helps.

Try at least for the sb600, so you can use all the ittl features offered by the D50.
Sunpak makes dedicated flashes for Nikon, I have an older model for a Nikon film camera, and it has performed very well.

You might find a used sb600 on eBay for less.
Good luck!

You can always go low tech and use a Vivtar 285HV. Set your camera to manual according to the automatic settings recommended by the flash distance scale. It actually works pretty well. TTL flash isn't the only way.
Just be careful of shoe voltage if you want to use another older vintage flash like the Vivitar 283.
The stoboist website has alot of good information.

First, formatting has no longer something to do with the flash. it is going to erase any image you have have been given saved on your card. have you ever tried using the flash in computerized mode? It would not paintings in all modes. If it pops up via itself, it may paintings although. it would prefer fix. or you ought to purchase a low-priced flash to mount on actual.
