Well first, like you said you already are, you need to be real good friends with him. If you tell him that your are falling in love with him then it will definately change your relationship: for better or worse. So just start hanging with him A LOT. It's when he doesn't know if you like him or not that he will end up liking you. You know what I mean? The mystery of it will attract him. I like a girl and she didn't like me at all. I told her and it ruined any friendship that was there. So don't tell him directly unless there is good signs that he likes you. I sincerely hope this helps.

Tell him that you really enjoy his friendship but wanted to know if the two of you could try going out on an actual date and see what he says....he may surprise you with his answer. If he denies the request tell him that you understand and you dont want to lose his friendship...nothing ventured...nothing gained!
