I was 13 when I received the Holyghost and I spoke in tongues. I was not scared and if you will truly let yourself worship God you will not be scared. :) I was worshiping God and it started feeling like there was a fire deep in my stomach. The more I worshipped, the more the fire feeling came. The next thing I knew I had been speaking in tongues for a few minutes.

I suppose God nonetheless indicates persons matters (prophesy) and I suppose there are persons who talk in tongues (languages) at the same time beneath the have an effect on of the Holy Spirit. The hindrance I have together with your mom, from what you let us know, is that she brags approximately those matters. Pride is a sin. And she sounds prideful or potentially she demands concentration, I have no idea. If she is studying your diary and looking you in church (whilst she will have to be targeting worshiping God) then she could also be flawed and manipulative. Speaking in tongues and prophesy/visions have been one of the crucial items of the Spirit Jesus promised we might have. Unfortunately, those matters had been misused via persons till they have got a bad connotation for such a lot persons. But there are the ones with natural causes and hearts almost God who nonetheless have those items!! Thank God for that....((Hugs))

What was the PURPOSE OF GIFT OF TONGUES?
Jesus cured the sick, raised the dead and performed many other amazing deeds. These miraculous powers identified him as a true prophet and servant of God, just as the performing of miracles established Moses’ authenticity as God’s prophet. However, speaking in tongues was not one of the miraculous powers exercised by Jesus. It was not until the festival of Pentecost A.D. 33 that this gift was first received, and on that occasion it served as an effective evidence that Christians had God’s spirit upon them.
In obedience to Jesus instructions, 120 of his disciples were waiting in Jerusalem to receive the promised “power from on high.” (Luke 24:49)
About nine o’clock in the morning, they all became filled with holy spirit and started to speak with different tongues, just as the spirit was granting them to make utterance.”—Acts 2:2-4.
What languages were the disciples speaking?
And yet how is it we are hearing, each one of us, his own language in which we were born? . . . we hear them speaking in our tongues about the magnificent things of God.’”—Acts 2:5-11.
From what occurred at Pentecost it is evident that the holy spirit was given to early Christians for the practical purpose of preaching the good news.
Now, do these recorded instances indicate that all first-century Christians spoke in tongues, and that, therefore, all true Christians would today? That is the conclusion drawn by some, but is that what the Bible indicates? NO!
Paul goes on, in the thirteenth chapter of his letter to the Corinthians, to show them the lowly position of tongues as compared with more important matters, especially the “surpassing way” of love. Even those blessed with the gift of tongues “become a sounding piece of brass or a clashing cymbal” if they do not exercise love, he explained. (1 Cor. 12:31; 13:1) And to emphasize the importance and permanence of love as compared to the miraculous gifts of the spirit, he wrote: “Love never fails. But whether there are gifts of prophesying, they will be done away with; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will be done away with.”—1 Cor. 13:8.
So after declaring, in verse 8, that the miraculous gifts of prophesying, tongues and knowledge are to be done away with, Paul shows that they were a feature of the babyhood of the Christian congregation. In its infancy such miraculous gifts were needed to identify in a spectacular way that God’s favor had shifted from the Jewish nation and was now upon this new congregation of Christians. But, as Paul explained, when a man reaches adulthood he does away with “the traits of a babe.” So when the Christian congregation grew to adulthood, that is, reached maturity by becoming a recognized, established organization, these miraculous gifts passed away. Yet faith, hope and love remained as the distinguishing mark of true Christianity.—1 Cor. 13:9-13.

Yes, you are right, it is real. It is recorded all through out the New Testament. I have spoken in tongues. I was at church the first. It felt wonderful to be that close to the Lord. No I was not scared at all. The more you understand it, the less afraid you will be. I pray for some of the ones who answered your question who make fun of something they don't understand. Woe unto them! God Bless You.
Edit: I agree with Panda's answer. Research Acts 2:37-39.

God does not give stupid gifts, like blabbering gibberish. Speaking in tongue has a purpose, to communicate with people from other countries, hence it's real languanges that the person has never been taught, not gibberish. Those people who roll around speaking gibberish are simply confused, brainwashed people who want to speak in tongue so badly they actually convince themselves they are.
Some of the people who were given this gift at pentacost travelled to foreign countries and were able to speak the native languages in order to spread the word. You see, speaking in tongues has a real purpose.

I do can not speak in tongues yet.
I may have come close several times.
I think I start thinking of the felling that comes over me, and that means that I am no longer concentrating on Him, and I get in the way.
I think that Paul told about talking with the voices of men and angles.

I believe that tongue speaking was for a certain time and place. It is referring to speaking in other languages. There is no where in Scripture where it is referred to as a "special" language or a "Heavenly" language. Read I Cor. 14. Gifts given by the Spirit are for the edification of the body, not for our own edification. I have been in churches where this sort of thing went on, no one was edified by this speaking and it did not serve the body in anyway.

Well, I really don't believe in tongues as the pentecostals believe, however if there is speaking in tongues there should be someone there to interpret.
