flip your dry dog food bag over...read the ingredient. does it list a MEAT MEAL first...or corn syrup or corn meal, any grain, brown or white rice...or something else?
corn syrup/meal, is the same garbage they use to make hard candy etc. it's not any wonder dogs love the hell out of it...it's CANDY! and completely NOT healthy!
if the label reads a meat first...but DOES NOT say MEAL after the kind of meat..then it's a BY-PRODUCT...which can mean that the food has feathers, skin, in trails, rotten and/or diseased tissue...etc. (and YES the USDA allows it).
STICK with a food that lists a MEAT MEAL FIRST on the ingredient list. AND make sure that the meat is FIT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION!!! dog food meat *in your crappy brands* is classified as "pet-grade" not "human-grade" it's a bit more expensive...but DUH...REAL disease free, choice cuts of meat WOULD cost more wouldn't it? when you buy cheap, you get cheap..and your DOG suffers.
Pet-grade could include the diseased-ridden, e.g. salmonella-infected, rejects etc.
Pet-grade meat is considered unfit for human consumption...why the HECK would you feed your best friend that crap!?
be careful about the REST of the ingredients too. so lets say you find a pet food that lists a meat meal first...for instance the Science Diet Lamb Meal and Rice kibble shows Lamb meal first, so you might think that there was more lamb than any other ingredient. Well..... note that the second, third and fourth ingredients are brewers rice, rice flour, and rice gluten. It is quite possible that there are more substandard rice derivatives in this product than lamb. And the quality of those grains and rice are usually considered pet-grade...meaning again, NOT fit for human consumption. Possibly mold, and/or ROTTEN grains and rices. basically supermarket dog food is just one big rotten bag of CRUD...SMOTHERED in a sweet tasting sauce that dogs find yummy...that's why dog food smells so horrible. They are masking the "real" ingredients with the sweet smell of candy.
Kind of like trying to find the silver lining in a sewer, isn't it?
So...what brands are meat MEAL, human-grade AND don't have such a high content of grains and rice?

I actually don't recommend dried dog foods at ALL. My other dog died from Malignant histiocytosis caused by the dried dog food he had been eating. They were Iams, Kibbles and Bits & Eukanuba. If anything go for a small company brand. The Organic ones should be best. I recommend maybe buying some 50 cent canned tuna, mixing it with bread and what not. Also chicken, soup; anything YOU eat actually! If you're thinking maybe you might go the natural food way, do some research on what dogs can and can't eat. Specifically your breed. Not all dogs are the same! And don't think it's more expensive, either! All you're doing is sharing some of what you eat everyday, so it'll barely touch your budget if you do it right! Good luck!!

My dogs will eat anything I put in their bowls. I have a Lab mix and Jack Russell mix. They get so much exercise that they really don't care what they eat. It's fuel.
I try different kinds of food every now and then though to see if different brands make a difference in their health. The only food I can tell you that doesn't agree with my one dog is Pedigree.

My nine-month old pit bull eats Pedigree Large Breeds dog food. Sometimes, I'll mix in a little Pedigree Lamb and Rice dry food, too.
But watch out! Changing brands too much... gives dogs gas!! ;)

I have a Lab so you must be kidding. She enjoys everything. I feed her Iams Maintenance 'cause she's watching her weight. She loves everything so I don't think it would matter to her but I believe you should always choose a high quality food for any pet you have.

my dog wont touch the stuff, meat in jelly only and she won't eat it if she sees it coming from a large tin, it has to be a small tin. Very fussy about brand too, pedigree chum or Winalot only !! and I thought my kids were fussy eaters

I have tried Iams, pedigree, eukanuba, royal canine, nutro, pro plan etc. But never science diet the main ingredient is soy not meat. After trying all of these my dogs favorite is still purina one. My vet says it is the best bang for your buck.
