With proper care, an indoor house cat can live between 15 and 20 years with the average being 18. On exception house cats can live upwards of 20 years. Outdoor cats live normally half that time, the average live span being about 9 years.

Not exactly common, my friend's started going downhill at about 13, couldn't control his bladder, started puking everywhere, it was gross, I can't imagine a 20 year old! ew. Mine are 3 and 1, so we have a while with them, unless something unfortunate happens. Before these two, my oldest cats were never above the age of 2, we lived in the country on a fairly busy highway.

A lot depends on genetics, but...a cat kept indoors, fed high quality food, given access to good vetrinary care, and well loved (emotional health is important too) can live a very long time.
I have one cat who is 20 and one who is 21. Both still like to play and are fairly active. My daughers fiance had a cat who had all the advantages mine do, but died in his sleep of an apparent heart attack, at age 16. If your cat is 20, you have done a good job.

Congrats! No 20 is not common. You must really be taking care of your cat. I have an 18 year old cat, who is healthy and as active as she was 10 years ago!

Wow, that is a tough old cat! 12-15 years is common. A 20-year-old cat is practically Methuselah.

That is becoming more and more common...
the average lifespan for a cat though would be more like 15 years, barring any really bad things like Feline Leukemia, etc...
But with better and better vet care and foods animals are living longer and longer... just like people.
