no matter where you are, if you watch the weekly special/sales papers the stores circulate, you can find out what is on sale and plan a few days meals accordingly around that. whenever you can stock up on non perishable item that are on special, for example if pasta or canned goods are on sale buy as much as you can so you can add to them with fresh goods on the next weeks sale. economical grocery shopping is a challenge for those of us who need to worry about it, but with some practice you can begin to feed a large family for less than 300 dollars a month. that is what it takes to feed my family of six in the US very well.

I have just found out about the bulk section in grocery stores, I always thought that the bulk section was for those who need tons of it, but on the contrare, If you need to get pasta, sugar, flour, baking soda, spices such as salts, pepper, seasoned salts, etc. This is the place to go with only a few cents a hundred grams, think of all the money you will be saving and you won't be paying for all that extra name brand pricings and packaging. When I moved to a different city, I went to all the grocery stores and checked all the prices on milks, soups, canned stuff, cleaners etc. I also asked all the stores if they had a website that advertised their sales. This way I noticed that they always have there next week sale already posted a few days before this weeks sale has expired, that way I know I'm getting the best deal possible. Always, Always, Always enter to win contests at the grocery stores, sometimes they have a winner at every store making your chances of winning free stuff even higher. and last but not least, try looking for sales that are buy one, get one free.

Aldi's is wonderful. We used to buy all of our basic food items there. (bread, eggs, milk, canned goods, etc). It saved us a lot of money.

You can try a SAM's CLub or COSTCO membership as well, but you need to watch the prices of some items. It isn't really a deal. (Like I can get a 10lb bag of sugar cheaper at Walmart, then Sams)

I know you said no coupons, but check out http://www.thegrocerygame.com it tells you how and when to use the coupons that come in the Saturday paper. You can print out the lists from a store near you. It's really handy. The goal is to "stock up" on basic items, so you are only running to the store to get perishable items. Saves $$$

One of my favorite meals is a box of Zatarains dirty rice, a half pound of fatty ground beef (drain after cooking), tortillas, and cheese. A 5 pound roll of 70/30 ground beef is about $12, and if you portion it up in 8 oz. packages, you'll have 10 pkgs for a month. I've found that I don't really need a whole pound in most things. Hamburger Helper is always a cheap weeknight dinner, you can get those at a Wal-Mart or Super Wal-Mart for about $2. A bag of Safeway brand salad mix is $3.50 when it's on sale. If you want ice cream as a rare treat, Haagen Daaz makes a single serving cup that's only $1. Here's my homemade Hamburger Helper recipe: 1 box Velveeta shell & cheese (about $2 at Wal-Mart) 1/2 pound ground beef 1 packet taco seasoning (I make my own) 1 little can of Ortega fire-roasted chopped green chiles Fry up the burger with the taco seasoning and chiles, and drain the fat. Make the mac & cheese. Combine!

Depends on your area...aldi's, or save a lot for grocery stores. Dollar General or Family Dollar for cheap groceries but nothing dairy or frozen.
