My new cavalier king charles spaniel puppy has had two sets of vaccinations (parvo/distemper/adeno flu) and will have his third and final booster in December. I'd like to know when it will be safe to take him for walks outside (I live in a city)- ie when he will be considered protected enough to be exposed to other dogs and their waste. I know parvo is very contagious and dangerous for puppies. The vey said that two weeks after his second set it should be ok to take him for short walks, but to avoid areas where other dogs congregate- like parks. She was rather vague about it and before taking any risks I just wanted a few other opinions about this from other dog owners- what did your vets say? I feel so sorry for him being stuck inside all this time, he's going a bit stir-crazy, but obviously I don't want to risk his health. Thanks for your input.

We always recommend that folks wait until the puppies have ALL of their vaccinations (the 3 combos and a rabies vaccination) to make sure they're protected not only from illnesses other dogs may be carrying, but also to protect them if they get into an altercation with a squirrel or other potentially rabid critter.

You can take your dog outside, just don't put him into high-traffic area where a lot of other dogs can congregate. Walks along the street and sidewalks may be fine as long as you're sure he doesn't get into any other dog messes. When you get him home, wash his paws in warm soapy water (and make sure you dry them off well so he doesn't catch a chill). Washing the paws helps to curb any bacteria he may have come incontact with; you don't want him licking his paws after being out on a jaunt without cleaning them first.

And don't leave him outside by himself until he's fully vaccinated.

Just be careful where you take him. Most people who walk their dogs have them vaccinated, so there should be no problem. A nice walk will do the both of you good.

You can take him out now. He is protected enough that if you don't let him sniff other dogs feces or eat enything then he will be okay. I have two dogs and also live in the city and that never crossed my mind...i took them out right away and they are both fine.
