Wow......Same answers, BUT here's mine which I've been told from my dad. If you take a look at the distance from each post and compare it to the neighborhood posts you will notice that the ones with the orange balls are farther apart. So the orange balls give the power lines a bit of weight so that a strong wind doesn't snap them easily. The road where the orange balls are located here in my city are not close at all to airports or high enough for a plane to take the balls. So that's my answer and what I personally believe.

airway marker ball
A colored ball, usually orange, gloss white, or gloss yellow, attached to the conductors or overhead ground wire on a transmission line to increase their visibility. Also called aviation marker ball.
Usually found in places where the towers are farther apart (and therefore it's easier for the planes to fly through the corridor).
Most often meant for smaller (personal) planes, rather than larger commercial ones.

I believe they're there just to make the powerlines more noticeable for the planes. You really can't see them in the dark or in a bad weather.

I wondered the same thing. My husband told me that they are so that aircraft know that there is a powerline.

Probably to stop them touching, arcing and catching fire I'd say.
