In most places it is a tort or civil matter. There are some jurisdictions where criminal defamation exists though such as Canada, Mexico and Montana:

You need to check the local laws of wherever you're at.

You can't get someone arrested for it in any country that I know of, however, you can take it to court as a civil matter. How successful you will be, and how far you can take it, depends largely on your country and, if the USA, what state. It can also depend on the degree of how ridiculous the statement is. Yes, no kidding. The famous case in the United States, 485 U.S. 46 (Hustler Magazine v Falwell 1988), the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in favour of the magazine, the opinion being that the statements were so outrageously crazy that nobody could reasonably assume them to be true. Technically this was a case of libel, which is easier to bring to court. Slander is not fixed in permanency, such as on paper or a web page, and so is much more difficult to pursue legally.

Slander, I believe is more of a civil matter. If you are a public figure it becomes even more difficult to use the courts to stiffle someone who is talking out, about you. The thinking there is, you put yourself out there for criticism and ridicule when you become a public figure.

No. That would be like having someone arrested because they insulted you.
Slander is a civil matter, not a legal one.
You can try to sue them, but slander is very difficult to prove.

Probably not, but you can sue them. You must prove that you were indeed slandered and there was not a word of truth in the accusations.

Arrested, no. It's not a criminal offense - it's civil. Take them to court and sue them for all they are worth. Just be sure that they have "slandered" you, or they can counter-sue for harassing them with the lawsuit.

No but you can definitely get sued for slander. And trust me you might lose if you say the wrong thing.

No. Slander is a civil offense. If you can prove damages, you can file suit for money.
