Mental health is a generalized term used for the health of one's brain...meaning things are going well and the way they should be going. Mental illness means there is obviously something wrong and therefore would need treatement from a doctor to correct the issue.

Mental health is a description, a bit like general health. You can look after your mental health, or have your mental health affected by something, or aim to improve your mental health. Mental illness is as it suggests - you have an illness, so depression, eating disorders, self harm are all mental illnesses. Does that make sense? I work with a lot of teenagers and mental health and illness is always topic of the day!!

You could argue that it's largely social. In western society people whose behaviour is seen as 'Mad', horrible word used most often in the totally wrong sense, are treated as a nuisance and preferrably locked away so they can't be seen. Its a good job this was not always the case or much of human original thinking would not have happened. In other cultures, often called 'savage' like the Sioux Indians as a good example, people who behaved like this were seen a 'touched by God" and honoured and this applies to many different cultures. The truth is, Mental Illness is an illness but because it generates fear in our society it is treated appallingly badly and so are the sufferers of it. On balance I wonder who the real 'savages' are?

Mental health is what everyone has. It can be good mental health or bad mental health. Mental illness is bad mental health and doesn't affect everyone.
