I have a 10 year old cat and 2 one year old kittens. The puppy is almost 6 months old. And he will not leave them alone! He's not trying to hurt them, he wants to play. The older cat wants nothing to do with him. But the kittens are trying to be friendly with him, but then he gets too excited and I'm afraid he's going to hurt one of them.

And when I let the cats out the dog runs out and chases them all over the yard.

We've had the puppy for 2 1/2 months now ... will this ever stop?

By the way, the puppy is big, about 40 pounds and he's 1/2 chocolate lab (we don't know what the other 1/2 is, we got him from a shelter)

They're animals and babies at that. Just make sure that your kitties can always get away from the dog to a safe haven somewhere. When inside my cats can always get in the basement, but the dogs won't fit through the door (we keep a chain lock on it). When outside, my cats just hop up onto the fence and look down at the dogs teasingly. If they want a safe return into the house, they know they can walk around the front yard, and vice versa.

It will take time, but they'll get used to each other. The chase game will calm a little as time passes, but I don't think it will ever totally disappear. My dogs know better but they sometimes still jump up and follow the cat into the kitchen.

My dog was the same way as a puppy. She did grow out of it as she aged and mellowed out after the puppy years. The most important thing is to be sure your cats have a safe place they can escape your puppy where she can't disturb them, like the top of a tall dresser, or under a bed. As long as they have a safe haven to escape to, they will be fine and eventually your dog will mellow out some.

Also, maybe supervise the play encounters so that you can make sure your dog remains gentle with the cats. He just needs to learn he can't be so rough, but gentle play time is acceptable.

Pick a word like "easy or "settle" and when you think the puppy is being too rough, say that to him over and over. Eventually he will figure out when enough is enough. I doubt if he will actually hurt your kittens they are pretty resilient and if they get scared they will hide from him.

plainly its from jealously its like saying who do you like better. cats or puppy. My sister had cats came after dog for instance. For some reason she chose to get thing most of her family was allergic to and most likely she loose. I fear cats due there fragile form. dogs can rough any terrain...can cat withstand the artic terrain...nope dogs can. I not including bob cat. house cats turn into popsicles. but serioulsy its all about jealously issues your puppy is jealous about the issue of how you have it with your cats. if you see from their perspective. who got most bedding and pet stuff I say cats. if they got equal stuff..and if you ban the puppy it be saying the cats won. and puppy will still chase them out anguish.
dogs & cats movie show exacting feelings just so you know.

train the dog. do not reinforce the behaivor and if he keeps doing it, tell him "no!". Reward him with a treat, if he does leave them alone. Try seperating them, also, until the kittys are old enough to be stable or defend themselves.
hope that helps!
