Because the want to charge you for their 'free' services. If it were truly free, they wouldn't need more than your name and address. If they have your card number, it's easy to charge you right away.

Depending on what you are trying to get free, there are restrictions on who they can send stuff to. If it is required that they keep a record of who they are sending something to, a credit card is a way of verifying your identity, as opposed to just trusting what someone types in as their name. Also, if there is an age restriction, a child won't have a credit card, so they won't be able to get something. The other reason is if something is free, but if you don't cancel, or respond in a certain way, it has a cost that they can start charging on your credit card. Always read the terms and conditions of their use of your info.

They want your card number to charge you for something that isn't so free. Most of the time they are trying to sell you a monthly service that has no real value. Coupon services do this a lot.

Get over$100 in coupons every month for a year.

Sound familiar? What they slip in is that it is only $99.00 per year or month or whatever. They say this so fast you don't have time to catch on.

This is considered fraud in most states. Just remember to hang up on them. The exception is some companies that YOU call may want to charge you for shipping. This is legitimate, mailing costs.

It's a carrot being dangled on the stick. Get your credit report IF you sign up for our credit monitoring service.

If you are looking for a totally free credit report (without asking for your credit card), go to the government mandated site

I agree, it has to be some kind of scam. The "know your address thing " is patently misleading. There are easier ways of verifying an address. Once you have have agreed to their TOU and they have your CC number they can charge whatever they like. -It's then up to YOU to prove they lied.
