Cats DO call. In the wild when the female cat is not spayed she cries and cries and calls when she is in heat so that a male cat will come and get her preggy.

You`ve been fortunate. You have never had the fun of being kept awake all night by caterwauling felines looking for sex.
Not only do cats call, they call loudly; they just don`t always come when called.
