are dogs the only animal that we age this way? if so then why?

Dogs don't live as long as humans do. Therefor, we need something to relate their aging process to that we are familiar with.

It's that simple.

EDIT...

Maybe the number to multiply was set by determining the average age of each species. Humans, 70-75 to dogs 10-12 (although the numbers may be higher). The chart at my vet says the magic number is 6.6

Just a guess. I don't know how it was determined.

I think we do age dogs in human years...most people will not say "My dog is 48 years old" when it is only six.

But I think that is just to show that since a dog's lifespan is so much shorter than a human's, when we say a dog is 8 or 9 it sounds young, but it really isn't for them.

but again why is it x 7? they were born one day and should age the same like my dog(chihuahua) just turned 2 yesterday but he's really 24! what gives?!

i believe its how old ur dog is times(x's) 7 and u get the answer for human years.

canine years are better than human years, (yet) while a canine is a million in human years (365 days), then the canine will become 7 in canine years. each and each option is 50% precise, yet option A is nearer to the fact.
