Look at their tail when they're in flight. A raven's tail will be shaped like a spade and a Crow's tail will be square.

Actually both species can be seen there....I might guess they were more likely crows as crows are usually associated more with urban areas, while ravens are usually in wilder areas, but they are NOT just found in the mountains. Check the tail when they fly, raven is "diamond" shaped, crows have a "squared" tail.

They are crows! Ravens are only found up in the mountains.

I always thought that crows and ravens were both the same kind of bird

Crows make the raucous caw sound and go in flocks.
Ravens croak (a gentler sound) and go in pairs.
Ravens are much larger than crows, but this can be hard to judge if you don't see them both together.

more likely ravens if they are kakkling at one another or at others in there surrounding area.
