Why are the knobs on gas stoves always on the front? I'd like to find an affordable gas stove with knobs on the back panel so my kids can't reach them.

You might have to purchase a used stove due to the fire hazards mentioned above. Tappan made a gas stove that had the knobs on the back as recently as the early 90's. Check the second hand appliance stoves in your area.

If the kids happen to get a hold of the knobs, I dont think they will be able to turn it on. With a gas stove (at least mine) you have to push down on it and turn it, then you have to wait for the entire burner to light. So good luck on finding one with the knobs on the back.

when you light a gas stove the flames would burn you if you're reaching for a knob on the back panel,

they sell safety covers for gas stove knobs - toys-r-us or hardware stores have them

Probably because they would rather not have people reaching across the stove. You could get burned or catch your sleeve on fire. You may find some brands with the controls in the center. i don't know if that would put them out of the reachof your kids though.

You won't find them because you have to lean over the open flame if in the back
