I successfully treated 'incurable' mange in a dog I had many years ago. The stuff I used was injectible ivermectin, 1% sterile solution for cattle. You get it at a feed store. Much cheaper than veterinary treatment, and every bit as efective.

**Beware** If you use this stuff, you must follow these directions unless you want to make your dog sick. Even then I cannot guarantee that your dog won't get sick, and neither can any vet guarantee that your dog won't get sick from what they give them:

Get the injectible bovine ivermectin, 1% sterile solution.
Get also a syringe.
Use 1/20 of a cc for each 5 lbs of dogs body weight. (In other words: a 5 lbs. dog will get 1/20 of a cc. A 10 lbs. dog will get 1/10 of a cc. A 15 lbs. dog will get about 1/6 of a cc. A 20 lbs. dog will get 1/5 of a cc. And so on.)

DO NOT INJECT INTO THE DOG. INJECTING INTO DOG WILL CAUSE SKIN ULCERS, SORES AT INJECTION SITE. GIVE ORALLY ONLY. PUT THE IVERMECTIN IN A SMALL AMOUNT OF CANNED FOOD. LET THE DOG EAT ALL OF IT, AND THEN YOU CAN FEED HIM THE REST OF HIS MEAL.

You should do this once a month, on the same day each month. For example, if you give ivermectin on the 10th of October, then the next dose is due on the 10th of November.

Ivermectin is active ingredient in heartworm preventative and some heartworm treatments. Also, it is active ingredient in some mange treatments. The method I describe (using bovine ivermectin) is commonly used by people who own and race sled dogs.

To use ivermectin to cure mange, you must use it once a month for more than a year. Mange will go away immediately, especially if you use mange dip as well. But in order to prevent recurrence, you must use the ivermectin eachmonth for more than a year, maybe longer than that. It is the only way to cure mange PERMANENTLY that I know of.

Also, you can use this ivermectiv for the whole life of the dog to prevent heartworms.

ANOTHER WARNING: NEVER USE IVERMECTIN IN COLLIES. IT MIGHT NOT HURT THEM, BUT MANY COLLIES SHOW SUCH SENSITIVY TO IVERMECTIN, THAT IT KILLS THEM. THAT IS THE ONLY BREED THAT I KNOW THAT CAN'T TAKE IT.

Good luck.

edited to add:
yes first poster said to dip the dog. I did this as well during ivermectin treatment. I used a preparation bought at feed store, containing mainly linseed oil and sulphur. I am sure that this accelerated greatly the healing process. Like, it brought about immediate results, while the ivermectin was slower to rid the dogs body of the mange. But then, the ivermectin certainly does work to cure it, and also to keep it from coming back. But you must continue (ivermectin) use for more than a year, and it is also a good idea to treat bedding, and the areas that your dog runs, plays, eats, etc. You can treat with mix of garlic oil and water, with sulphur dust (if outside), and other stuff that you could find at pet or feed store.

Demodectic or demodex mange also known as red mage is sort of like and auto immune disorder.
All dogs have the mites on their bodies but only some dogs react to them.
It can be treated with shots of ivermectin alternating with a dip type once per week. It can be put into remission but stress and other things can bring it back. Many dogs have it flare up and then get treated and it never comes back some have problems all their lives with it.
Treat it with your vet as they have the right meds to use and can most times get it into remission.
At our rescue we see dogs with it and have successfully treated it in several dogs.

my puppy had a extreme case of demodectic mange. I took him to the vet for eight wks. and every week he dipped him I do not know the identify of the dip after which positioned him within the doggie dryer The vet didn't consider he might live to tell the tale the demodectic mange, however he did and used to be cured of it I in my opinion might move to an additional vet

Red mange is curable but it is a lengthy process. It is also expensive to treat.
