"It takes most cats about 8 to12 months to develop a friendship with a new cat. Others never become friends, but and will simply mutually avoid each other."

I got this from the ASPCA website. There is a chance that they are the cats that will never become friends but can mutually cohabitate by avoiding each other. If they are aggressively fighting, I would try to reintroduce them to each other using all the correct steps. I have a male & female and they get along very well. I was lucky enough, though, that I got them both as kittens (under 1 year old) so it was easier for them to adapt. Our introduction only took about 2 weeks.

My male and female cats have been together for over a year and they just barely tolerate each other.

Four months is really long for some adjustment not to have been made. You don't give any details so how can we make suggestions. You might go to www.spiritessence.com and read about how flower essences are used and what you might expect from them. I use them frequently and they work well with my cats.
